A new hope? …yeah, wrong science fiction setting but hey, in space no one can hear you scream, right?
Well, it is time to throw down and give my two pence worth on the imminent release of the all new Warhammer 40,000.
I have written and talked about my love of 40K many times over the years from forum conversations to blog posts, I have also gone into detail about my entry to the game and it being way back at the very beginning with Rogue Trader, I have played all editions apart from 3rd and I have enjoyed every edition, I am one of those players that embrace change and looks to find the fun in a new game or ruleset and the latest release will be exactly the same, if not more since it boasts a completely new direction for the game and not just a tweak or badly crammed in rule addition. I also don’t want to dwell on previous editions, they are still there, I can still crack out and play a game of any of the older versions if I wanted to, and people seem to forget this, but what I will probably do is keep playing three distinct builds, Rogue Trader, 7th edition and of course 8th or New Hope edition as I am going to call it.
Why keep 7th edition? …well, I have spanked a lot of money on the many books, cards and accessories and relatively recently, to simply stop playing it or selling it for very little seems such a waste.
What do I want from the new Warhammer 40,000 game? …it may sound selfish when I say this but I don’t want a game that focuses on balance, I have never been a competitive player and care very little for tournament play, what I do want is a game that is easy to pick up and play, one that makes me get out and use all my models rather than the same tried and tested ‘go to’ setups, but more than anything, I want fun and lots of it.
I am at the point now where I want to introduce my children to the game that I fell in love with way back at the start of the 90’s and as 7th edition stands it would be practically impossible to do that.
There is also a positive vibe from the re-established online presence that GW has decided is now a good thing for business …really? …No?? With Warhammer 40,000 having its own web page, Facebook page, Twitch TV channel for live broadcasting and of course a section on the Warhammer TV YouTube channel.
Thoughts on what has been shown so far?
The pictures and articles published so far have been very good, I love the new box set models and I will look at these in more depth over the next few days and post my thoughts. I am also liking what I am seeing from all the ‘leaked’ datasheets and spoilers but I am not getting overly bothered by the rules until I get my own copy and get stuck in and play me some 8th.
So, more posts of what’s out there and my thoughts to come…
Ral Partha Europe has done it again, and this time it’s a collection of Piratical Dwarves …Yarrrrr!!!
I rarely back a Kickstarter, mainly because I am a tight Yorkshireman, but it seems RPE have an open invite to my hobby funds. I do love me some classic looking Dwarf miniatures and of course, everyone likes pirates, so Dwarf Pirates are simply a no-brainer purchase (thanks, RPE).
